Pearly gates

Well, you go to church every Sunday,
And forget what you heard by Monday.
God is just a word for you
To tell other people what to do,
But you never even eat off your own plate
And you'll be waiting at the Pearly Gates.

You say it doesn't matter what your deeds are
As long as you are a believer.
So make your speech and soothe your soul
Pretend that it can make you whole
But there's no way believing's all it takes
And you'll be waiting at the Pearly Gates.

Heaven's not a country club,
Some can join and some are snubbed
Depending on the church where you have been.
It's all just within your mind
And there's no gate to hide behind
To keep all the people out you don't want in.

Well, you tell me, that unless I do it your way
That I will be stranded at the doorway.
But it can't make much sense to say
That there can only be one way.
A billion people left to just one fate?
They won't be waiting at the Pearly Gates.
They won't be waiting at the Pearly Gates,
And you'll be waiting at the Pearly Gates.
