Dead deer

Your mom woke us up early
Still dark outside
It felt like we had just fallen asleep
We dressed in silence
Too tired to speak
Made our way up the carpeted stairs

Your mom made us breakfast
Tried to pretend that it was just another day
I tried hard to remember what had gone down
But all I got were flashes
Running by the barn
Your brother coming home

Trying and failing to take my shoes off
Getting in the car
Knowing you were lost
Not knowing who was driving
The next thing I know it's the garden of eden
Where are they taking us?
What did we do?

I saw a dead deer in the road on the way home
